I was super lucky to be shown around the Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle by an actual cossack and to watch the sunrise from the fortress.
When I went to take some pictures of the castle before the first rays of sunlight (we were there for one night only and had to leave around noon), I was met at the door by a handsome blue-eyed cossack who asked me if I'd like to take a look around.
Apparently, that day there was a reenactment of the historical battle here and so a whole bunch of guys spent a night in the fortress (I'm guessing to fully get into character :) and one of them showed me the castle and explained how people lived here back in the day.
At the time I was not yet blogging about my travels, too in awe to remember to take pictures of everything and frankly, too shy to take photos of the cossack, but feeling like one of the boys watching over a fortress felt pretty spectacular. I was shown the well and the huge bread-making stove in the courtyard where bread is still made once in a while. The castle sort of became alive for me that morning.
There are many things to see in Kamianets besides the castle so it is worth staying here for a full day or two. And if you have the luxury of time: check out the Khotyn Fortress located a 30-minute car ride away.
EAT:
I had a nice lunch at the "Frant" Restaurant which serves traditional food. If it is warm when you visit, definitely take a table outside on the terrace.
I've had a delicious Flat White at the Kav'yarnya Podil's'ka Kave which is right across from the Armenian Well.
In Zarvanskiy Cafe has a nice cake selection but I haven't tried it personally, but my friends liked it.
STAY:
There are many accommodations for different budgets and needs in this town but we stayed at the Art House Hostelwhich was pretty nice.
