Ancient Submerged City: Halfeti
Eastern Turkey

This marvelous must-see old town on the river Euphrates, located between Gaziantep and Urfa, is partially submerged underwater. Today it is known for its mystical black roses (sadly just an urban legend) and a picturesque view of the sunken minoret. Visiting Halfeti is a beautiful but a bittersweet experience though: the historic town which was populated since 9th century BC, along with hundreds of ancient villages in the area was flooded after the construction of the dam in 2000.
It is a sight worth traveling for though. Nicknamed “The Hidden Gem of Turkey”, Halfeti has been designated a status of a ‘slow city’, which means you won’t see much car traffic through the center of the city. The main focus in Halfeti is on preserving traditions and in general just slowing down to appreciate the beauty of the place and nature around it.

To see the Old Halfeti part with picturesque views of the minaret coming right out of translucent waters - you have to take a boat tour. We took the last boat ride, right around sunset and really enjoyed it. You will pass by the ancient caves and get a glimpse of the Rumkale castles along the way.

Note: if taking a boat ride around sunset like we did: bring something warm and windproof, it can get pretty chilly.

STAY:

Kasr-ı Canan or Sahan Tas Konak Hotel These two hotels with traditional ambiance will sure make your experience visiting Halfeti an unforgettable one. Do not stay in the modern hotel right on top of the hill though, it got bad reviews and ruins the small-town feel with it’s an overpowering presence.

Do not skip the guy selling tea or chai on the street! I highly recommend having a cup or two: it is an absolutely delicious local tea and the gentlemen selling it is very friendly. I’ve included a picture of his very authentic Turkish Samovar so you don’t miss him by accident.
