Top 10 Instagrammable Places Malacca

MALACCA

Melaka for me is the most Instagrammable town in Malaysia. It is relatively small but packed with beautiful old houses, vintage coffee shops and colorful murals. Loads of efforts are made to make it an ultimate destination for tourists who usually stop by when traveling between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. I love Malacca for its pedestrian-friendly layout, very friendly people, good food, fantastic night market and chill vibes. It is definitely on my Malaysia must-visit list and here are Top 10 Instagram-worthy spots to make you want to come here ASAP.

1. Malacca River Walk

Loads of work was put into making this canal walk an Insta-worthy one. New colorful murals with Malaysian culture themes have been commissioned and they definitely make the whole place more picturesque. Not a bad place to meditate, dude.

2. Encore Melaka

Very Instagram-worthy spot with a contemporary building sure to make a perfect backdrop for your minimalistic atmospheric shots, especially around sunset.

You can also see a very colorful cultural show here. I’ve never seen such an amazing theater design before: a 360 degrees rotating stage revolves around you while fantastic lighting and state-of-the-art graphics make the stories come alive.

I definitely began to understand Malacca and Malay culture a great deal better after watching this show. There is a scene about motherhood, which feels like it came straight out of the Handmade’s Tale, and it makes you understand how important motherhood is in Malay culture. Don’t forget to say hello and take photos with the staff after the show.

3. Chinatown's Facades

One hundred-year-old facades of Chinatown are waiting for those who love a rustic vibe and loads of intricate and colorful details. Each house is just so unique: some are more restrained in its decor, others go all out and this makes this neighborhood so unique and probably my favorite Chinatown in Malaysia.

4. LOCAHOUZ & other Coffee Shops

Chinatown Vibes overload! Highly decorated spot with loads of red lanterns welcoming you in, a dramatic wooden staircase, vintage furniture, a waterfall of hanging jungle plants and a small garden in the back. So many opportunities for an Insta-worthy shot in this place, it’s overwhelming! All I can say, you will be sipping your mocktails in style, my friends.

5. Chee Family Mansion

There are a few old mansions around Chinatown but unfortunately, most of them are abandoned and not being taken care of. This all-white beauty is definitely in good hands and its historic value is not taken for granted. Perfect for old colonial aristocracy photos.

6. Christ Church Melaka

The most iconic place to visit in Malacca, makes a wonderful backdrop for photos. Loads of tourists here though so plan accordingly. For a good shot, take the steps up.

7. Urban Jungle Walk

Don’t worry, there is a Starbucks on a side. Most tourists don’t make it that far when taking a walk along the canal but it is worth checking out. The vibe of the natural elements and plants taking over the concrete urban jungle is actually very deliberately designed. There is an unfinished monorail who’s curves follow you throughout the walk making that jungle seem super urban and futuristic. I definitely enjoyed this little, less known segment of the walk.
Location: near 3D Museum

8. My Kiehl's Heritage

Probably the most popular wall in Malacca! I am guessing it’s all about the combination of old and colorful new located in close proximity to the most popular street in town - Jonker Street and the beautiful canal walk.

9. Masjid Terapung Selat Melaka

I was mesmerized by this architectural masterpiece and how beautifully it seems to float on the water. I sat there for 20 minutes imagining an old movie (add that VCR vintage filter) with Ali Baba or Aladdin climbing up, running around, squeezing into a little window, jumping down the concrete petal details to escape from the 40 thieves.

Sunset is the best time to visit for those Lokum pastel-colored shots.

10. Malacca Sand Dunes

Less known place for scenic shots because you need to have a car or take Grab to reach this beautiful destination. You can’t swim here either, but the dunes and the sunset view are definitely worth traveling for.

My advice: bring drinks and snacks with you for an amazing picnic.

"Malacca fascinates me more and more daily. There is, among other things, a mediaevalism about it. The noise of the modern world reaches it only in the faintest echoes; its sleep is almost dreamless. Its sensations seem to come out of books read in childhood."
